Selon le rapport Last Mile Distribution du GDC : State of the sector report, les distributeurs du dernier kilomètre (LMD) ont étonnamment réussi à accéder à un soutien financier externe, compte tenu de leur petite taille. En 2019, 86 % des LMD interrogés avaient obtenu des subventions, 69 % avaient obtenu un financement par la dette et 41 % avaient obtenu des fonds propres ; tandis que 28 % avaient obtenu les trois types de capitaux. Cependant, la plupart des capitaux propres et des dettes sont venus de la famille, des amis, des investisseurs providentiels, des crowdfunders ou des fondateurs eux-mêmes. Le type de financement commercial à plus long terme et à plus grande échelle nécessaire aux entreprises en phase de croissance n’est pas non plus largement disponible.

L’accès au financement est constamment cité comme la priorité numéro un et le principal défi des membres de GDC. Avant COVID-19, 94 % des membres de GDC étaient à la recherche d’un soutien financier supplémentaire et ce besoin est resté largement constant pendant la pandémie.
