Selon le rapport 2019 du GDC sur la distribution du dernier kilomètre : State of the sector report, les distributeurs du dernier kilomètre (LMD) ont étonnamment réussi à accéder à un soutien financier externe, compte tenu de leur petite taille. 86 % des LMD interrogés avaient levé des subventions, 69 % avaient levé des fonds de dette, 41 % avaient levé des fonds propres – tandis que 28 % avaient levé les trois types de capitaux.

Cependant, la plupart des capitaux propres et des dettes provenaient de la famille, d’amis, d’investisseurs providentiels, de crowdfunders ou des fondateurs eux-mêmes ; et l’accès au financement est toujours cité comme la priorité et le défi principal des membres du GDC. Le financement commercial à plus long terme et à plus grande échelle nécessaire aux entreprises en phase de croissance n’est pas non plus largement disponible.
